Do you ever get the feeling some employers hire veterans only because it’s the politically correct thing to do or to meet the minimum legal requirements like the Uniformed Services Employment Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA)?
Some do, and it’s sad. Our veterans deserve better — on Veterans Day and every other day of the year. As a veteran myself, I’m proud to say this about Schneider: We hire veterans for the right reasons, and we have a strong record to prove it.
Highlights of Schneider’s military history:
- Founded by longtime National Guardsman Al Schneider in 1935.
- A formal military recruitment program since 1992.
- One of the first employers to join the Wounded Warrior Program.
It’s a legacy we are proud to carry on. We value veterans for who they are and what they bring to the table. Veterans feel right at home with:
- Schneider’s core values of Safety, Integrity, Respect and Excellence.
- Being given a set of instructions and completing the task without oversight.
- Being away from home (although Schneider offers a wide range of home time options).
Are you a veteran transitioning out of the military?
Separating from military service and transitioning to civilian life can be stressful. So many questions rushing through your head:
- What do I do now?
- How does my skill set transfer?
- How do I even apply for a civilian job?
All important questions — I’ve asked them myself and helped many other veterans asking them. Hopefully my journey can help save you from some of the bumps in the road that many veterans experience.
I grew up in a military family bouncing from base to base, and I joined the military right out of high school. I transitioned out of the military in 2001, and I really wasn’t sure what I wanted to do next.
After working various general labor and corporate jobs, I finally found my place in 2007 as a Schneider truck driver. I wish I had found Schneider right away. Truck driving really is the perfect job for someone transitioning out of the military, but that doesn’t mean you have to stay in that position forever.
I’m living proof of the incredible range of career paths available here. I started as a solo Over-the-Road driver, tried Team driving for a bit and helped fill in on various Dedicated accounts before advancing to a local instructor position. Then I went back to school and got into Recruiting. Finally, in 2014, I moved into my current role as Schneider’s Military Recruiter.
I’m now honored to travel from military base to base, helping people who were in a similar position as I was find meaningful employment with Schneider (without all the bumps in the road in between!).
What makes Schneider’s military program better?
It’s one thing to hire vets for the right reasons — and we do. It’s another to offer those vets the best benefits — and we do that, too. G.I. Jobs® agrees, recently naming Schneider the highest ranking truckload carrier in its 2016 Top 100 Military Friendly Employers list . We’ve been on the list for 10 consecutive years. Here are some reasons why:
- Credit for Military Experience Program — Up to 100% of your time served will be converted to Schneider driving experience credit towards pay and benefits.
- Apprenticeship Program — Use GI Bill® benefits to receive tax-free educational benefit checks up to $1,266 each month, in addition to your Schneider paycheck.
- Extended benefits and differential pay if deployed for up to 18 months, and a guaranteed job when you get back from a deployment.
